PDFs missing on Web library

Kathryn Jeffery Feb 08, 2012 11:40AM GMT

I've created my library in Mendeley Desktop but can't see all the pdfs on Mendeley Web, so it's not synched properly. I've only used 185MB of my personal web space. Also, I can't get Mendeley Web to sort my reference lists in the same order as Mendeley Web to check the synching.
What can I do?

Please try going to your Edit Settings in Mendeley Desktop, activating sync for selected folders, and selecting all the folders manually before saving and syncing. When this sync is complete, either disable sync completely or disable sync for the folders you do not wish to sync, and sync again. This should clear your personal storage space. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I followed your instructions but I still have a large number of pdfs on Mendeley desktop that do not upload to Mendeley Web, and I still have a lot of personal web space free. The references appear to be synching properly, but not the pdf attachments.

I have the same problem with the group. I drag and drop some documents from "My Library" to the group, but some pdf attachments (without any specific rule) are not available in the group. I still have a lot of personal and group web space. Thanks.

Kathryn, have you recently removed your references? They no longer appear in your library.

Paolo, are you able to open the files that will not upload in the group’s library in Mendeley Desktop? Thanks in advance.

Hi- I removed them temporarily last night to re-set everything but then re-added them- I can currently see them on my Mendeley web library (there should be 1808 documents in total). It looks like the references have synched correctly between desktop and web. Note that in my desktop library, not all references have actually been given pdf attachments, but of the ones that have, a large portion is missing from the web library.
I have also just created a group and see the same problem as Paolo; no pdf synching from the desktop to the web group, although the pdf attachments are visible and open correctly on desktop.

Hi - Am having the same issue as Kathryn and Paolo.

Interestingly collaborators can add PDF files to the group which appear on the web and also show up on my desktop version for download.

Hi,
What can we do Support? Only about 1 in 4 of my pdfs are synching to the web library- I've also tried re-creating the pdf links on desktop, moving pdf's to new locations, removing references from folders, then adding them one by one and resynching.....I can't see any pattern with the pdfs that have synched as opposed to those that haven't.

Regarding the question:

"Paolo, are you able to open the files that will not upload in the group's library in Mendeley Desktop? Thanks in advance."

I can open all the pdf in the group with mendeley desktop. I can open only some pdf if I use mendeley online. The same problem appears for other people that joined the group, but now both online and with mendeley desktop.

Apologies for the trouble that this may be causing you. In order for us to best diagnose what’s gone wrong can you please perform the following:

1) Send a copy of your verbose log to us via email.

You can find detailed instructions on how to generate a verbose log file with Mendeley Desktop (and how to locate the log file on your computer) by reading the following FAQ entry:
http://www.mendeley.com/faq/#generate-verbose-log

2) Confirm a few details on your computer.

We’ll need you to confirm the following information on your computer: the version of Mendeley Desktop you’re using, the operating system, and the version of that.

With this information, we should be able to get to the bottom of what’s wrong, and consequently fix it. Thank you in advance.

Hello Support team,

For a few days now I'm experiencing the same problems as the other users stated above although I did not try any group options so far.

At first, only the newly added documents wouldn't upload. So I followed the checking/unchecking procedure for folders to be synchronized. Now the majority of all my uploaded documents is not available anymore and only a handful of documents is online.

Are there any news yet as to how to proceed?

Thanks you very much!

Me-too post: I have the same problem with several files not being sync-ed.
How do I send you the relevant log file? It actually refers to at least two of my problem cases:

The first skipped PDF has been, indeed modified. But since I cannot modify a PDF on the web interface, that should actually not matter (i.e., the desktop PDF should have precedence over the web PDF).
So:
1. if you need more information, where should I mail it?
2. what's the way to fix the problem, as it's obviously a CRC issue which will not get fixed by simply re-sync-ing.

Thanks,

Alex

The library on my hard drive has about 6 GB of files but only about 3GB are being synched with web. Looks like the citation metadata are synching, just not the pdfs. I tried the steps above but it didn't help.

Will send more info.

I am having the same problem. The PDF files which will not upload for me so I can open them from Mendeley Web, Mobile, or another computer with Desktop installed, all have been added to My Library after mid-January 2012. I am not anywhere close to my personal or shared web space limits. The problem is not caused by editing/annotating with an external program since this happens regardless of whether or not they have been annotated externally (most have not been). I am wondering if this is a lingering problem related to the sync problems in 1.3.0 since it was exactly the day that I read about this problem on your blog when I started having this problem.

Here are the fixes that I have attempted:
1) Clearing my web space:
-web space usage before changing anything was 808 MB
-changed sync list to Selected Folders, then do Save & Sync. Web space usage after doing this was 375 MB.
-Then do the same and disable syncing to clear my web space. Web space usage after doing this was 0 MB, and syncing with my iPhone caused all the PDF files on my iPhone to be deleted as expected.
-Then reenable file syncing for all documents. Web space usage after doing this was 50 MB. I then synced my iPhone, and it showed that only 73 files were available on the server to be downloaded. It said these were downloaded, but I do not have a single PDF file available to view on my iPhone now. They all only have options to View on Web or Share by Email.

In other words, doing this has just removed almost all of my PDF library from the server, and now I can't even read them on my iPhone!

I know that the maximum file size for a sync is 50 MB (I get a notice saying so every time I sync because I have a PDF file which is 90 MB). I wonder if this is some sort of glitch related to this limitation. Again, this glitch has only occurred since the sync problems that occurred in January 2012 happened. Perhaps this bug was introduced during implementation of the fix.

If there is anything else I can do please tell me. I would be happy to help troubleshoot or provide logs.

p.s. the number of files on the server before this, not including the number in groups, was 577.

New information:
In order to see if the same problem occurred with groups, I created a new private group called test01 and added all of my documents to it, then clicked on Save & Sync.

Unlike when I cleared my web space in a previous post, this time the sync took a while, but not as long as one would expect it to take awhile for several hundred MB to upload. I suspect this was the reference, meta, and annotation data being uploaded to the group, and not the files. My Library on the website shows the new group and the complete list of files, but it does not have the option to view even one of the PDF files that were synced. Yes, I do have the option to open the PDF files from My Library or the groups while on my main computer, which is the one from which I was able to view them as mentioned in my first post. When I synced my iPhone and secondary computer, they have the same results as the website: I can view the references but not the PDF files.

New Information: iPhone App
I also tried reinstalling the iPhone app. Before reinstalling, iOS said the app was using 829 MB of space. I deleted the app and this information, and reinstalled it. It synced with 643 references (including the group references) and downloaded 87 files. Note that this is more files than mentioned in the previous post. After downloading the files, the app was using 43.5 MB. I was only able to find one of the files that had downloaded--I only randomly checked files since checking through 577 files is not a good use of my time.

I hope this detailed information that I am providing is useful to someone!

Joshua, could you please move the file that is 90MB into a folder which is not synced, and try to resync your library? At present, if a file is over 50MB, Mendeley Desktop will give you an error message and abort the sync. If you stop trying to sync the large file, the program should be able to complete its sync successfully. Thanks in advance.

Yes, this fixed the problem! My web space now has 836 MB used, and My Library on the web does have the PDFs available, and my iPhone app is now downloading all the files that were missing from it.

It used to be that this did not stop the sync process. I had this file in my sync folders since at least July 2011 and it did not cause a problem until I installed Desktop version 1.3.0 or 1.3.1. They should change the notification message for files over 50 MB to make it more clear that the file prevents syncing from completing. As of right now, the message simply states that files over 50 MB cannot be synced.

I have the same problem. Some files upload, others don't. I use Mendeley 1.3.2 on Windows XP. My individual files are not bigger than 5MB, they are all in the same folder and I have plenty of space in my web storage. I don't receive any error messages and there is some percentage progress shown when I sync. I also tried syncing individual folders, but the problem remains. Please help, organizing PDFs is the main reason why I chose Mendley.

I too have the same issue, though none of my files are over 50MB; the largest is 11MB, and that syncs fine. 1/4 don't upload the PDFs onto the web server.

I'm changing to a new computer, and I need my PDFs attached, so this sync is quite important.

Could you please try updating to the dev preview (available from http://www.mendeley.com/download-mendeley-desktop/preview/) and seeing if this helps? Thanks in advance.
